Worth knowing
Thai Mother’s Day, 12 August
Mother’s Day in Thailand falls on 12 August, not in March or May — and this catches out almost every foreigner in their first year here. If you have a Thai partner, her mother’s expectations are set to this date, and missing it is noticed.
It’s a national public holiday, which changes the practicalities: families gather, many shops close, and the roads are busier than usual. Order a day or two ahead rather than relying on same-day.
Jasmine is the traditional flower
White jasmine — dok mali — is what Thai children traditionally give their mothers, usually as a small garland rather than a bouquet. It carries a specific meaning here that roses simply don’t, and giving it shows you understood the occasion rather than reached for the default.
Light blue is the colour associated with the day, so an arrangement with white and blue tones reads as deliberate. If you want something larger, a bouquet with jasmine included is the safest way to combine scale with the right symbolism.
If you’re sending to a partner’s mother
This is one of the highest-value gestures available to a foreigner in a Thai relationship, and it costs very little to get right. Remembering her mother’s day, unprompted, says more about your intentions than almost anything else you could do.
Keep the card simple and respectful. If your Thai isn’t fluent, write it in English and ask us to add a line in Thai — we do this constantly around 12 August and we’re happy to help with the wording.
Questions about this occasion
When is Mother’s Day in Thailand?
12 August every year. It’s a national public holiday, so plan a day or two ahead — shops close, families gather and the roads are busy.
What flowers are traditional for Thai Mother’s Day?
White jasmine, known as dok mali, usually given as a garland. Light blue is the colour of the day, so white and blue arrangements read as deliberate. We can include jasmine in a larger bouquet if you want both scale and the right symbolism.
Should I send something to my Thai girlfriend’s mother?
Yes — and it’s one of the most appreciated things you can do. Remembering her mother’s day without being reminded carries real weight in a Thai family.
