Worth knowing
A gift for a new baby — and the parents
Everyone sends something for the baby. Almost nobody sends anything for the two exhausted adults who haven’t slept in a fortnight — which is exactly why a gift that acknowledges them is the one people remember.
Our new baby boxes are built around that. Something lovely for the baby, and something for the parents that isn’t another muslin they already have three of.
What they actually need
By the second week most new parents have more baby clothes than the baby can wear before growing out of them. Practical things get used; decorative things get photographed once and put in a drawer.
If you know the family well, food helps more than almost anything. If you don’t, a keepsake the parents will still have in ten years is the safer choice — a first photo frame, or something with the date on it.
Timing and where to send it
If the baby has just arrived, send to the hospital only if you know they’ll still be there — Thai maternity stays are often short. Sending to home a few days later is usually safer, and arrives when the visitors have gone and things are quieter.
Keep the palette light. Deep reds and heavy arrangements feel wrong in a room with a newborn; soft pastels and something gentle suit it better.
Questions about this occasion
What should I send for a new baby in Thailand?
Something for the baby and something for the parents. Our boxes pair a soft plush and practical baby items with flowers and a keepsake for the mother — the second half is what people remember, because almost nobody thinks of it.
Should I send it to the hospital or their home?
Home is usually safer unless you know they’re still admitted — maternity stays here are often just a couple of days. A gift arriving a week later, when the visitors have gone, is often more welcome than one lost among the first-day rush.
Is it appropriate to send flowers to a new mother?
Yes, and they’re very welcome — just keep them soft and light rather than dramatic. We’d suggest pastels over deep reds for a room with a newborn in it.
